Athletics

January 14th, 2020

Dear OPRF Student-Athletes and Families,

Please find updated information below from the Illinois High School Association.  The IHSA Board of Directors met on December 2, 2020 to discuss several topics, including the timeline of winter sports.

Given Governor Pritzker’s current mitigations, the IHSA has no expectation of starting low risk winter sports until late January or early February. The IHSA will continue to monitor the Tier 3 Resurgence Mitigations that are in effect currently. When there is a timeline from the Governor, for the state to emerge from these restrictions, the IHSA will be prepared to restart lower risk winter sports.  The IHSA and OPRFHS remain committed to creating as many opportunities as possible for all sports to be played this school year. The IHSA and OPRFHS will  also continue to evaluate the spring and summer season start and end dates, which may now change depending on when the winter season resumes.

STUDENT-ATHLETES who were participating in TRYOUTS-Boys Swim & Dive; Girls Gymnastics; Cheerleading; Drill Team

PLEASE NOTE based upon the current state mitigations, the IHSA and OPRFHS have no expectation to begin any winter sports seasons until January 2021.

This pause in winter sports  affects all in-person tryouts, practices and activities for the following sports: Boys Swim & Dive; Girls Gymnastics; Cheerleading; Drill Team

OPRFHS will follow all IHSA and IDPH guidelines during this pause.  Once the pause has been lifted, all athletes who attended the abbreviated tryouts on Nov. 16-17, and/or who are currently registered for the winter season with the OPRFHS Athletic Department will receive an email from their Head Coach with detailed information regarding how and when tryouts and practices will resume for the winter season.

STUDENT-ATHLETES who were registered and planned to participate in Boys and Girls Basketball

The sport of basketball is still categorized as a “high-risk” sport, and therefore, we are still awaiting further guidance from the IHSA regarding whether basketball will continue during the winter season, or if it will be moved to the spring or summer seasons.  Once we receive that information athletes and families who are registered basketball will also be sent detailed information regarding how and when tryouts and practices will begin.

BADMINTON UPDATE-PLEASE Read if you are a student athlete who registered to participate in Badminton

Given its status as a low risk sport, the IHSA has moved the girls badminton season from the spring to the winter season.  Once the pause has been lifted, all athletes who are currently registered for the winter badminton season with the OPRFHS Athletic Department will receive an email from their Head Coach with detailed information regarding how and when tryouts and practices will begin for the winter season.

Thank you for your support, patience, and flexibility in this situation.
